Our condolences: Death of Prof. Marmura.

The staff of muslimphilosophy.com joins the philosophical community around the world in offering condolences to the family of Prof. Michael E. Marmura. Prof. Marmura passed away, on Thursday September 17, 2009, in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. He was a professor emeritus in the Department of Middle East and Islamic Studies. He is the author of many works in on the history and philosophy most notably in the field of Avicennian and Ghazali. He is the translator of Ghazali's Incoherence of the Philosophers and Ibn Sina's al-Shifa - Metaphysics, both printed by Brigham Young University Press under the Islamic Translation Series Imprint. He will be sorely missed.

MARMURA ; Michael Elias -- Born in Jerusalem, Palestine, 1929 , died Thursday September 17, 2009 in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Beloved husband of Elizabeth for 47 years, loving father of Heather, Stephen (Bridget), and Timothy, grandfather of Simon, Phoebe, Hana and Alex. Beloved brother of Nada Marmura and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by siblings Najla, Wadad, Aziz, and Ella. A scholar in the field of medieval Islamic philosophy, Michael served the University of Toronto for over fifty years as a professor, chair and professor emeritus in the Department of Middle East and Islamic Studies, later to be named Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations. He worked closely with the Pontifical Institute at the University. He was a member of the Royal Society of Canada .
