 Our condolences: Death of Prof. Edward W. Said.

The staff of muslimphilosophy.com joins the philosophical community around the world in offering condolences to the family and students of Prof. Edward W. Said (1937-2003). Prof. Said passed away in New York City, USA at 6:45 AM EST on September 25, 2003 at the age of 67. The cause of death was leukemia, which Prof. Said had been battling for several years. He is survived by his wife, Mariam Cortas, a son, Wadie, and a daughter, Najla. His writings have been translated into 26 languages, including his most influential book, Orientalism (1978), an examination of the way the West perceives the Islamic world. Much of his writing beyond literary and cultural criticism is inspired by his passionate advocacy of the Palestinian cause, including The Question of Palestine, (1979), Covering Islam (1981), After the Last Sky (1986) and Blaming the Victims (1988). He is the only American citizen to receive the Owais Prize. He is also the author of the following works: Joseph Conrad and the Fiction of Autobiography. Beginnings: Intention and Method. New York: Basic Books. The World, The Text, and the Critic. Representations of the Intellectual. The Politics of Dispossession. Culture and Imperialism.
