I am searching for the origin of a quote given to me by my philosophy teacher it is of Middle-Eastern origin and has been translated into English if these words are familiar to you please return my e-mail and help me out it is a fun game not homework!!! '"when reading my present treatise bear in mind that by faith we do not understand merely that which has been uttered by the lips, but also that which is apprehended by the soul" his intentions are to enlighten closed minded angered individuals to the beauty of Middle-Eastern religions and Humans he's a pretty cool dude!!! thanks Barbara

Answer:

Dear Barbara, Thanks for writing to us. Yes that is statement is pretty much part and parcel of most of the literature that we have regarding what is called aqidah (creed). If you look at books that are about the Islamic creed you will find such statements on what is faith. Faith is no mere lip service. It is what is instilled in the heart deep down (soul if you well). So that statement is pretty much true.

I hope that the above is good for your purposes. There is an old book that you might find in any good university library called Islamic Creed by A. Wensinck. I believe has such statements in English translation. Yes it is way cool. BTW dude in Arabic means worm a lowly life form. I know you did not mean that. Enjoy,

Good - finally a decent site on the subject. You might want to e-convert the old Sharif edited 2 volumes on Muslim Philosophy as they still are better on the whole than the newer Nasr and Leaman. Also it would be a good idea to have the primary texts in arabic and persian too. two links that might interest you www.mullasadra.org www.islamic-studies.org/journalnumber.htm which is the site for Transcendent Philosophy, a comparative Islamic philosophy journal best, sajjad

Answer:

Thank you and we invite anyone that wants to help us achieve this end. As for primary texts, we will try to find as much as we can. There is a link to one al-Ghazali's books on Isul al-Fiqh.  If you or anyone knows of such links let us know. We will also investigate the links/sites you mentioned. Thank you for your comments and suggestions in advance. Muhammad

Answer to Angel Question

Answer to Angels question... Although this is not our specialty this is what I know: Named Angels in Arabic have important functions. What is Gregory's function? There is Gabriel - Jabraeel in Arabic - Messenger. There is Michael - Meekaeel in Arabic - do not know off hand. There is - Israfeel in Arabic - He takes the souls. There is Munkar and Nakeer - They are the questioners in the Grave. There is two unnamed Angels who were in Babel who taught people Magic as mentioned in Chapter two (The Cow) of the Qur'an. I hope that the above helps.

P.S. I got the following Answer from Rev. K. (Kimba) Green: There are the "Grigori" Angels do you mean them? It is pronounced the same exact way. They are "watcher" Angels -- some good -- some bad. If these are who you mean let me know. If it is the specific name of "Gregory" then no, I do not know of this Angel. If this name was presented to you [or friends, family, etc] it could be that the Angel was presenting this name so that the recipient would feel more comfortable. The only true names that Angels have are the ones that are bestowed upon them by the Creator.

The Arabic word kalam means "speech," but more broadly it means "natural theology" or "philosophical theism" (Craig, Kalam, 4)

Outline of the Kalam Cosmological Argument is as follows:

  1. The universe either had (a) a beginning or (b) no beginning.
  2. If it had a beginning, the beginning was either (a) caused or (b) uncaused.
  3. If it had a cause, the cause was either (a) personal or (b) not personal.

In each of the arguments above support is offered for premise (a).

I read Muslim Philosophy all the time, and I love the info about past philosophers and their mystical insights. I am currently quite keen to find out more about a philosopher called 'Abdu’l-Karim al-Jili', but I can't seem to find anything on the website. If possible can you please add this. I am also looking for a book called 'The Path of Divine Unity' by the same author, Jili. Do you know from where I can get a copy of this book from. Thanks for your help, and keep up the good work.

First of all, this site is fantastic. May Allah Bless the maintainers of the site. We need such efforts to spread the message of Islam today. In a related effort, we are writing from Sajdahbooks.com, a new site featuring the work of Allamah Muhammad Iqbal. The site is still under construction but we invite you to visit the site to see a sample of the titles we are offering. We urge all the visitors of this site to visit www.sajdahbooks.com frequently for updates.

Dear All Shabats I am a muslim student in Indonesia, where I have difficulties to find some sourcebooks on Islamic Philosophy. By this site, I most am helped to find most information about these themes. The thing that I wanna you do here, it's would better if you also up-grade some philosophical thoughts in recent years, like Islamic Liberalism, Islamic Socialism, etc. The other thing, I hope you can make some informations about Islamic World Conferences, and publishing all or some papers from it; unfortunately in philosophy and tasawuf, I most like tasawuf, especially Ibn 'Arabi's school, Rumi, and Attar. Just it I say, thanks so much of your site. Jakarta; May 22, 2002 Yours Sincerely, Hodri Ariev Postal Address: Karangharjo 02/II No. 20 Silo Jember 68184 East Java Indonesia.

The dictionary is great, up to a point. I came by with a very definite question in mind, namely, how did the Arabs express Aristotle's "matter" (as opposed to "form"). I thought it might be _mawduw&_ and the entry for that word makes clear that it was not. But to find out what the proper term is, it looks like I have to read the whole thing through. Therefore, a reverse index to it would be admirable. ("Plus of course if we could have the Greek and scholastic Latin too for each concept," dreamed the dreamer....) Best wishes. John H. McCloskey

Answer:

Dear Mr. McCloskey:

Although the Arabic word for matter is mada. That word is not in the dictionary. The reason is that this is the modern usage of the word.  What might help your research is the following words from the dictionary:

  1.  Hayula - prime matter

  2. Surah - form

  3. Jism - body

For more information on Aristotle in Arabic you may consult the following entries:

Aristu in Encyclopedia of Islam

Also Aristotle in Routledge's Encyclopedia of Philosophy .

As for your other suggestion I will take them into consideration.

The real expert in this matter is the late prof. Abdurahman Badawi and Prof. Dimitri Gutas of Yale University.

Assalamu alaikum

I was searching for any "little" information about islamic philosophy for my studies. And was really thrilled when I saw a one and only homepage about that! And that mostly in english! Alhamdulillah! And thank you people for this incredible work. May Allah bless you and reward you, for the knowledge you share with us. I'm really happy and will visit this site soon inshaAllah. (Have bookmarked it already). But one question: When will you share some information about Ibn Arabi? Thank you Salams from Germany

Answer:

We will not be having much information on Ibn Arabi (Ibn Arabi society), Mulla Sadra (Sadra Islamic Philosophy Research Institute), nor Muhammad Iqbal (Iqbal Academy Pakistan). There are very good sites that specialize on these personalities.  These organizations with singular focus do justice to their legacy. Our aim was to fill a gap where it was lacking information.

I was told by a prof of mine that the Muslim philosophers didnt believe in the Platonic view of a separately exisiting World of Ideas.

(1) Is this so of *all* the Muslim philosophers?

Also, (2) what is the relation -- if any -- between universals and the alam al-mithal, the imaginal world, in Ibn Arabi's thought?

(3) Is there some kind of significant philosophical parallel between Ibn Arabi's alam al-mithal and Plato's World of Ideas seeing that both of these realms stand between God and the world of the Senses?

Thanks Avikalil Syria

This religious, truth-tight web-site is an essential no-pork protein for today's war-famished Earth. We must now more than ever vigilantly raise the manusciptual flags of ibn Sena, Biruni and the whole gamut of Allah-guided intellectuals against the 'bacon of blood' which is the ignorance and violence of overfed, manipulative, bigotrous, terrorist bushmen.

The high quality of this site may be compared only with very few other sites, such as Tufts University's Perseus Project.

Assalamu alaikum,

This website is superb, mashaAllah. May Allah comfort you for efforts, ameen. I was wondering whether you might include a beginners guide section, that explains in simple terms ( as possible) about philosophy and Islamic philosophy?

with peace zaynab

Islam is an arabic word, and an ommiscience universality should not be confined neither is held custody by a language, arabic alone. What's the essence of underlying truth to this?? Trancedental, transmigration and emanation of ommipresence need to be reached, and reaching thought through language had been human greatest adversary. The books of relevation were in different forms of language, addressing God with different names.

These differences were the bisis of religious differences, lost in time and taken for granted unable to see they are the same...the created is the creator.

There is no two way to this predicament, for Islam to remain relevant. Islam is not a faudamental religion, its the muslims that had made it so. Is there a reason why its not called muslim faudamantalists rather than Islamic fuandamenalist?? Islam belongs not only to the muslims but it also belongs to those non muslims. Its there in Aramaic, Sanskrit, Hebrew....to the atheists, pagans, philosophy, science, art and phychology of human existence.

Its about Finites and Infinity. Separating them is impossible, but we have made it possibile. Next time around, those faces we see are images of an Infinity. Images dressed and spoke to create diversity for an Infinity....

There is one way rarely seen in human's epoch as Finity melts itself to assume Infinity, to assume state of infinite conscious, Universal Conscious. Until then, try not to be an animal, rot and decay when die. Dust to dust, discounting another possibility, light to light.

If only, language able to comprehend thought and if only thought can be reached by only one language.......

The physics of religion lies in the metaphysics of thought, conceived and emanated progressively for humanity. What needed is for human to think and the ongoing regressions of scientism is the testimony of this. There is nothing wrong to the cogito but there is everything wrong for the extensa.

Try not to make this philosophical forum another ergo sum of extensa.

Dear sirs, I am very grateful to you that you are and, that there is such remarkable portal on Islamic philosophy. You have very much helped with literal sense to me as at us in Uzbekistan it is very difficult to find works of great philosophers in the Arabic. I now am engaged in research of political views al-Farabi by use of methods of the system analysis, is going also results of the researches to publish in such very popular Internet - resources. And accordingly my first request to you would you recommend what resource / site to me? As very much to you would be grateful if would prompt me where it is possible to find e-text « as-Siyasa al-Madaniya » and “ Fusul al-Madaniy ” of Abu Nasr al-Farabi. To you it is once again grateful, hafazakum Allah Sayyid Jamolkhon al-Orifkhoja from Uzbekistan

Dear to heart Ustaaz Muhammad!

I do not find corresponding words to express you my respect and gratitude that you have deigned to answer my letter, have responded to my need. I'm very grateful to you. Really, the resource alwaraq.com appeared very useful, due to you I have found one more very necessary source of the information. However I shall dare to hope, that if I have received from you text of “ as-Siyasa al-Madaniya ” of al-Farabi in PDF format, it except for other would serve still to strengthening of my spiritual connection with the man (Ustaaz Muhammad Hozein) which already I think the spiritual instructor and the teacher for me. As to our acquaintance became the reason existence of the first and unique portal on Islamic philosophy. As it occurs in light days of Ramazan Karim.

Sincerely yours, Sayyid Jamolkhon al-Orifkhoja

P.S. I ask the application, unfortunately my post program could not send my letter, therefore is compelled to overload to the Guest book.

My name is Alfredo Henrique C. Lustosa Cabral, and I have been studying both arabic language and islamic philosophy for over five years now. I have recently graduated in Psychology, and my monograph, which had been presented as a requisite, talked over a dialoque between the concept of ´asabiyah, from Ibn Khaldun´s work, and the identification in freudian theory. If someone is interested in this field, I would be happy to send it by email. I´m also interested in the Moorish influence in medieval Portugal/Spain. If someone wants to trade information on this It would be great. Last but not least, I would like to thank the staff of muslimphilosophy.com where I found works of great importance for doing so. with my regards, Alfredo Henrique C. Assalamualaikum, I am shaheeda, late last year I was in search for spiritual gain and met a someone who is really dear to me now. He introduced me to this site and the literature and opend my heart. As does a rose, and the heart drowning in its scent. I believe when religion has the theories applied to it, it makes the subconscience aware of it and understand and therefore comform to the values of religion. I have found this site remarkably useful. It increases, the spirituality of all those who read it. I hope this site always remains and becomes greater, I believe that the value placed on this site is priceless because to enhance a persons spirituality and help them become closer to Allah (S.W.A) without being in touch with them but just providing the resources is excellent.

JazakAllah

Regarding the influence of Islamic philosophy over Jewish Philosophy, yes there is a cross pollination across all philosophies. Jewish philosophy grew in the middle of other philosophies such as Greek and Egyptian. In the medieval period it was affected by Islamic philosophy (which was affected by just about every philosophy out there). This is clear in the writing of Maimonides, Guide to the perplexed for he was affected by al-Farabi and to a lesser degree Avicenna.

Jewish philosophy did not grew up in a vacuum and these philosophers did not do philosophy on an island in the middle of the Pacific ocean.

There is no shame in this as we are all one humanity and knowledge especially philosophical knowledge is not the sole ownership of any one people.

My understanding of Jewish philosophy and just about every other philosophy is distinct from religion. Sure there is a religious element in that philosophy but I argue that it is a separate discipline.

As for references: See Routledge's History of Islamic Philosophy, ed. by Nasr and Leaman in which there is a section on Jewish philosophers of the Medieval period.

I hope that the above at least explains the thoughts behind creating the chart of Islamic philosophy.
