Assalaamu alaikum I am glad you have made this site. Can you please tell me if there is an English translation of the Ihya? Shukrun jazakillah khairu Najah

Answer:

English of translation of the Ihya has had a very bad history. There is a translation from Urdu by Fazil Karim. There are at present an effort by Islamic Text Society out of England to translate it. Parts of it have made it into print by T. J. Winter and others. There are chapters of the Ihya that have made it as well such as the Duties of Brotherhood by M. Holland. There are many booksellers that have these books one such bookseller is Halalco. see: http://www.halalco.com/al-ghazali.html Regards

I came upon your site by accident, and to my surprise I spent a wonderful and informative hour reading about great philosophers and scientists. I came away with a sense of being cheated in that I had never heard of any of these scholars in any history I'd previously read. The path to peace lies in knowledge: first and foremost of course, of the One God. then knowledge of ourselves, of others, and the world in which we live.

Answer:

You are not alone in these feelings.

Salaam Alaikum , May Allah reward you brother for putting the great texts of the great Imam on your site ! In these days of violent extremists and the rigid people who feed their madness , we Muslims , the Ummah needs the intelligent , spiritual guidance of teachers like him ! Also for poor Muslims who can't afford the book prices it's a blessing ! I'm a recent "revert" from august last year and got somehow depressed with all the "salafi" papers going on and on about kufr and bid'a ! What a revelation it was for me to learn about imam Al-Ghazali through people like shaykh Hamza Yusuf from the Zaytuna Institute and Nuh Ha Min Keller Subhan'Allah ! Keep 'em , those great texts coming please !

Answer:

Br. We here try not take sides in this conflict because it does not bring about any benefit. It is best to study Islam through the original sources and the works of great scholars. We can not just throw 1500 years of Islamic heritage. Our site is dedicated to one facet of that great Islamic Heritage (turath).

AS SALAMU ALIAKUM, MY NAME IS ABDUL BATIN RAFIQ AND I AM TRYING TO STUDY FROM THE ENGLISH VERSION OF THE IHYA. I THINK THAT IT IS A WONDERFUL SET OF BOOKS . HOWEVER, I REALLY WISH THAT A BETTER ENGLISH VERSION WERE IN PRINT,IT REALLY WOULD HELP ME IN MY DAILY STRUGGLE TO REMAIN A MUSLIM UNTIL DEATH.

Answer:

There are good translations done by Nabih Faris but it is not the complete Ihya and it is on the site. There is also some very good translations by Islamic Texts Society which is not on the site as it is under copyright law. It would take many scholars many years to complete a authoritative translation of the complete Ihya so you can start with these volumes.

As-Salamu Alaykum:

Alhumdulillah, this is a very good effort in presenting Imam Ghazali's excellent books to the world. May this become the best Imam Ghazali website on the net. Ameen. There are 3 important things I want to mention for the benefit of all.

1. Even though a complete English translation of Imam Ghazali's masterpiece "Ahya al-Uloom ad-Deen" (Revival of Religious Learnings) has not been done, Imam Ghazali's other masterpiece in Persian called "Kimiya-e-Sa'adat" (Alchemy of Eternal Bliss) which is a summary of Ahya, is available in complete English translation from Halalco Books at www.halalco.com. This 1002 pages books has a beautiful introduction (which is also present on your website) plus 40 steps or chapters that correspond to the 40 chapters [Imam Ghazali calls them "books"] of Ahya but not in so much detail as in Ahya. This costs only $22.50 + shipping and is a good substitute for the non-available complete English translation of Ahya. To find this book, go to www.halalco.com then click on "New Books" icon and you will see it on the very first page (as of Dec. 27, 2002) with the title "Alchemy of Eternal Bliss".

2. You have listed Imam Ghazali's beautiful masterpiece "Minhaj al-Aabideen [ila Jannatu Rubbul 'Aalameen]" (The Best Way for the Worshippers [Leading them Towards the Paradise of the Lord of the Universes]) under the categories of books that are probably not written by Imam Ghazali. With all due respect brother, this is a very important book of Imam Ghazali as it's the last book ever written by him which he read to his select students. This book lists 7 stages (of spiritual evolution in 7 chapters) that lead one to the Ma'arifa (nearness) of God. In this 400-page book, Imam Ghazali has repeatedly given references to his Ahya so that readers can get more details about what he is discussing from there. Anyone, who has read both the Ahya and this book "Minhaj al-Aabideen", will know that it's totally consistent with his Ahya and there is no contradiction between the two books and is definitely Imam Ghazali's characteristically powerful style which is peculiar to him alone. Imam Ghazali says in the introduction of "Minhaj al-Aabideen": "When people could not understand the fine points that are mentioned in my book Ahya and other books, they started useless arguments against it and started disputes. I turned to my Creator and pleaded to Him to enable me to write a book on which every learned or common person would agree and benefit from. My Lord responded to my Du'a (supplication) and inspired me [with Ilham - Divine inspiration] the marvellous arrangement/organization of this book and informed me, through Divine inspiration, about the inner secrets of worship. This is the kind of organization that I have not been able to keep in any of my other books. And this is the book I myself praise."

Imam Ghazali, in this beautiful book, which can be considered the crux or short summary of Ahya by explaining the most critical points, has explained the inner path through the concept of worship of our Creator that everyone agrees with, without using the terminology of Sufism/Tasawwuf. Anyone who thinks that Sufism/Tasawwuf is not a part of Islam, will start walking on this path after reading this book even without knowing that he/she is walking on the path of Sufism/Tasawwuf. This is the beauty of this book. This book has been a source of great inspiration for great scholars in South Asia who have done many Urdu translations of this book [that are available in Pakistan and India] and recommended it to their disciples for spiritual training. Al-Baz Publications in Hollywood, Florida (www.al-baz.com), which specializes in translating and publishing books of great saint Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani, is currently working on translating this book into English. You can contact them to verify that this is indeed the book of Imam Ghazali. You can also contact Shaykh Nuh Ha Mim Keller, a modern day authority on Imam Ghazali and his Ahya and a Shadhli Sufi Shaykh and a scholar of Jurisprudence, about verifying the authenticity of this book by contacting him through www.masud.co.uk. You can obtain a good English translation done in Pakistan of "Minhaj al-Aabideen" under the title "Best Way for the Worshipper" by publisher Dar al-Isha'at from Halalco Books at www.halalco.com. Click on "Books" icon, then click on the link "Imam Ghazali - Books on him or by him" to find this book.

3. Those who know Urdu, can get a 100% complete and excellent modern Urdu translation of Imam Ghazali's 4-Volumes 3000-page Ahya called "Ahya ul-Uloom Jadeed" by publisher Dar al-Isha'at, Urdu Bazaar, Karachi, Pakistan from Pakistan. This excellent Urdu translation was completed by Maulana Nadeem ul-Wajidi in 1998 and published by Dar al-Isha'at using Urdu computer word-processing software. Although many complete Urdu translations of Ahya are available even in the US, this particular translation is the best. Ask your relatives in Pakistan to buy and ship it for you. It only costs like 900 Rupees (US $15) to buy it and another $10 or less to ship it via "Surface Mail Registered" (but takes 3 months to get it in US). They can also ship it by "Air Mail Book Post" or "Air Mail Book Post Registered" for about $20.

Wassalam, Irfan.

You are doing a great service with this website - may Allah reward you.

You list Book XIX of the Ihya as "Enjoying good ....."; should this not be "enjoining"?

A shame about the picture: The Book of Knowledge includes as one of the characteristics of the learned man, that "The signs of the fear of God should be evident in his appearance .....No one will ever view him without being reminded of God. His face will reveal his works for the eyes of the righteous one reflect his soul. The marks of the learned men of the hereafter, too, are recognized in their faces which reflect tranquility, lowliness and modesty."

(In this context, what can we deduce by comparing the faces of Donald Rumsfeld and Osama bin Laden?)

Fiqh al-Seerah is not by Imam Abu Hamid al-Ghazali. Fiqh al-Seerha was written by the late Sheikh Mohammed al-Ghazaly (RA) for more info on him see the following site (http://www.masmn.org/Biographies/20th_Century/Mohammed_Al_Ghazaly.htm)

As'salmu alikum WRB,

I am grateful to you for providing the works of great Imam. I have noticed that some of the files have been cnverted to PDF from scanned documents. I have downloaded one on Penitnec and again changed to PDF. Now it is esily readable and the file size also has decreased. Now it is 74 Kb. If you want I can send it to you.

Please reply.

I curiously enough had the same God experience as Al Ghazali, namely I felt a warm light in my chest, this has been a few years ago. Only I don't know whom to talk to about this, or anyone can tell me what it really means.
